Charice competes with self

Breaking news: Charice’s no. 44 position in the “Billboard Hot 50” list has been greatly overshadowed by Pinoy Apl.de.Ap’s Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” which is in the no. 1 slot!

charice pempengcoSince Charice is a signed international artist of USA’s Warner Brothers Records, it’s Warner Music Philippines which will release her single “Note to God” in the Philippines this week. “Note to God” is no. 44 in the Billboard Hot 50 list in the US. This single will compete with her own “Always You,” a release of Star Records, her Philippine music label, which is number two in local music charts.

STIR thinks Charice will suffer short term in this self-competition. Besides competing in single sales, her packaging has started to clash as they are different in both labels. In Star Records, she has a preppy image in candy-color windbreaker and Macaulay Culkin pose. In Warner Brothers, she’s packaged like a young Celine Dion with big black curls and black jacket. Quite a contrast, isn’t it?

Opposite packaging reflects target markets. Her preppy packaging will be laughed at in the US while the young adult packaging makes her look older than the more veteran Sarah Geronimo. Charice is 17 while Sarah is 21. This image will surely jolt Pinoy admirers who are used to her wholesome image. In the clash, something will snap.

Charice has accomplished a feat not even veteran singers Lea Salonga or Regine Velasquez has done, that is, having two different hit songs in the Philippines and US music charts. But like the packaging image that will confuse her fans, her target market will be divided, making it a competition of marketing power. Charice’s career will definitely be affected and one side is bound to suffer unless, of course, both sides can come to an agreement.

======================

I can't believe how lucky this girl is. She's gonna have two songs in the charts from her single in US and sa Pinas. Really really really lucky girl! But I still like Sarah Geronimo though. I just wonder what's gonna happen kung si Sarah ang na-discover sa youtube. Hmmm...

  1. She's really indeed lucky! No doubt about that. No offense though, I just don't like her. But it doesn't mean i'm not proud of her. And I'm happy that a filipino achieved what she did.

    About Sarah, I like her too kaso pang Pinoy lang talaga ang market niya.
